November 2024: We are delighted to announce that we have received funding from Digital Scholarship at Oxford (DiSc) to advance two exciting projects that explore innovative ways of engaging with historical collections. Here is what we are focusing on:

Mapping the 'Their Finest Hour' Collection

We are investigating how to develop an interactive digital tool to explore the Their Finest Hour archive, which includes thousands of personal stories and objects from the Second World War. Using visualisation techniques, we aim to highlight the global nature of the conflict and reveal connections between individual, localised experiences. The project looks at how tools like maps and timelines might make the archive more accessible, meaningful, and engaging for researchers and the public alike.

Extracting Keywords from Crowdsourced Collections

This project examines how automated, AI techniques can identify themes, emotions, and concepts within the collection. The aim is to develop processes that make it easier to search and discover materials in a way that reflects contemporary research interests, such as the history of emotions or memory studies. This approach could help researchers uncover patterns and stories that traditional tagging methods might miss.

These projects are collaborative efforts, bringing together historians, digital humanities specialists, and technical experts. Keep an eye out for updates!
